A business plan always includes assumptions.

The employee you’re developing will be ready for more responsibility. A long-standing client will stay. Growth will improve profitability. You’ll have another five years before you need to make a bigger change.

Any one of those may be completely reasonable.

But how much of the future you want is riding on it?

In this episode of Scaling with Intent, Peggy Niles explores the difference between having confidence in a plan and allowing too much of that plan to depend on something you don’t fully control.

Through the kinds of conversations she has with experienced business owners, Peggy looks at what happens when a good plan meets changing people, clients, financial realities—or simply a future that unfolds differently than expected.

This isn’t about assuming something will go wrong or creating a backup plan for every possibility. It’s about recognizing what you’re counting on, understanding how much depends on it, and deciding whether something inside the company deserves attention now.

Because strategic planning isn’t only about what you expect to happen next. It should also strengthen your ability to make good choices when it doesn’t.
